SUN MICROSYSTEMS

Andreas Bechtolsheim (Bechtolsheim), as a part of his project at Stanford University , designed a workstation from used components he had picked up from Stanford labs.

Bechtolsheim designed a system for network integration and equipped it with high resolution. The system handled engineering and graphics tasks faster than the systems that were in the market...

The Acquisition

As Sun could not turn profitable, it started actively looking for a buyer. Analysts expected that its competitors in various product lines like IBM, HP, Dell, and Cisco would be interested in buying it. IBM, HP, and Dell could buy Sun as they were the top three players in servers market whereas Sun stood in fourth place. Cisco's announcement of its plans to enter the servers market in early 2009 made it as one of the possible contenders (Refer to Table I for top four players in Global Servers Market as of December 2008)...
