The financial markets are valuing highly these Australian companies' non-tangible assets such as brand equity, differentiation, innovation, first mover advantage, market dominance, customer loyalty, execution, and customer experience."4 Woolworths, well known as the 'fresh food people' in Australia, was established in 1924.

Its businesses included supermarkets, consumer electronics stores, discount department stores, petroleum and liquor outlets, and hotels.

As of June 2008, Woolworths operated approximately 3,030 stores comprising 2,192 supermarkets, 567 merchandise stores, and 271 hotels, including 8 clubs5.

For the year ending June 29, 2008, Woolworths' annual sales grew by 10.7 percent to A$ 47 billion6,7 and net profit by 25.7 percent to A$1,626.8 million.

Woolworths had grown steadily over the years through constant innovation, high levels of service, and improvement in its business operations. Its brands and formats had grown and evolved significantly to meet the wants and needs of customers...
