Case Code: MAA0093K

Abstract:
On 21st December 2005, Seagate acquired Maxtor for US$1.9 billion. Owing to the rising competition and falling prices of personal computer hardware, Seagate was finding it increasingly difficult to leverage its market leadership in hard disk storage. Many analysts felt that the acquisition of Maxtor was a visibly planned move by Seagate to consolidate its position in the hard drive business and stop a further fall in prices. This case provides the reader with a broad overview of the two companies, the hard disk storage market scenario, the synergies of acquisition and the road ahead.
Pedagogical Objectives:
- To provide a broad overview of the two companies and the hard disk storage market scenario
- To discuss the possible synergies and challenges of the acquisition.
