Introduction:Beijing-basedBaidu.5 comInc. (Baidu) is China’s leading Internet search-engine firm withmarket share of 37%. Baidu's services include algorithmic search, pay-for-performance, enterprise search, and a host of specialized services, which include news,multimedia, and image search. Baidu operates its websites and provides online advertising services in China through its subsidiary Baidu Netcom. Baidu Online, its other subsidiary, operates an enterprise search software business and provides technology consulting to Baidu Netcom. The company sells its onlinemarketing services directly and through distributors. It also operates Baidu Union, a network of third-partyWebsites, and Baidu Post Bar,with more than 820,000 message boards. Baidu directory has 740 million web pages, 80 million images and 10 million multimediafiles Baidu broke even in 2003 and became profitable in 2004 with earnings of $1.45 million on sales of $14 million. It has been nicknamed as 'China's Google'. However, Baidu's revenue in the third quarter of 2005 of $8.5 million was low compared to Google's $1.38 billion. "Baidu is generating this relatively puny cash flow despite being the most visited website in China and the fifth most popular in theworld." Many observers claim that Baidu does a better job with Chinese language search than Google. Co-founder and CEO of Baidu, Robin Li, said, "Actually, I think the unique strength for Baidu is we are a very focused company. We were founded in the end of `99, actually beginning of 2000 we started the operation." |
