Abstract:
The burning of fossil fuels and the effects of deforestation raised the concentrations of heat trapping 'greenhouse gases' in our atmosphere, which in turn increased the Earth's temperature at alarming levels. Consequently, the issue of global warming gained great significance. The Kyoto Protocol was one of the ways conceived to tackle global warming, with nearly 183 countries ratifying the protocol. The countries were committed to reducing their emissions of carbon dioxide and five other greenhouse gases associated with global warming. Under the protocol, developed countries must cut all greenhouse gas emissions by an average 5% below the 1990 levels, by 2012.

Pedagogical Objectives:

  • To study the background and need for clean development mechanism projects.
  • To analyse India's potential and the future prospects in carbon trading.
  • To analyse the issues and challenges involved in carbon trading.

Keywords :  Emission reductions, Climate change, Global warming, United Nations Framework Convention, Carbon credits, Kyoto Protocol, CDM (clean development mechanism) projects, India's projects on carbon trading, Greenhouse effect, The carbon market, Opportunities for CDM projects, Carbon trading, Adoption of clean technologies
