Private equity firm Warburg Pincus' sale of its 12% stake in the Indian telecommunications service operator Bharti Televentures, for $560 million on March 14th 2004, created flutter among the private equity firms around the world. The deal was the largest private equity deal in the history of the Indian capital market. 2004 also witnessed the highest private equity investment of $1.3 billion in India. Over 90% of the investment came from overseas investors, showcasing India as an attractive investment destination. But some critics were apprehensive about this trend.
