By the turn of the 21st century, Lucent Technologies, which was one of the leading providers of carrier network equipments in the world in the 1990s, was on the brink of disaster. Due to heightened competition in an already saturated global telecom market, Lucent witnessed a sharp decline in its revenues and even its survival became uncertain.
