Abstract:
Cricket had its beginning in England in the 17th century. During the 18th century Britishers brought the game along with them to India. In the course of time, elite Persians, Hindus and Muslims had joined the game and thus it flourished among the rich class. In due course, Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) took the leading position in raising the game to its pinnacle. India's victory in the 1983 World Cup brought international recognition and intensified the love for the game among the masses. This opened new avenues for BCCI in the form of broadcasting rights, title sponsorship, etc., making it one of the richest cricket boards in the world. However, BCCI has been bitterly criticised for its monopolistic practices and bureaucratic administration. Added to this was the dissatisfaction and unrest in the vast pool of talented players who went unrecognised. All these factors contributed to the formation of ICL, which began to challenge the age old dominance of BCCI in the Indian cricket.
